Ma Candidature

Dear colleagues,

 

​I am honored to present my candidature for the Vice-Presidency of the IGU Executive Committee. I have been a member of the Spanish Committee of IGU and an individual member of IGU, a member of the Commission of the IGU on “Urban Geography” since 2000 and was also a member of the Steering Committee of the Commission on a “Cultural Approach to Geography” from 2004 to 2012. I am also the person in charge of the Spanish Regional Action Center related to the International Year of Global Understanding (IYGU), one of IGU’s flagship projects. This is an initiative I consider fundamental in order to spread geographical knowledge through society and, specifically, among public decision-makers playing a role on spatial planning. For the last few years, I have served on the Spanish Committee of the IGU and the Asociación de Geógrafos Españoles (AGE) as the person responsible for Foreign Affairs.

My participation in the Executive Committee of the UGI wants to contribute to the enormous work carried out by the institution. In particular, I would like to target two. Firstly, to act as a bridge between European and the Latin American communities of geographers, in order to favour greater participation in the IGU of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries and universities. Secondly, to open the possibility that Spain could host future IGU events.

I first got involved with the Spanish Committee of IGU because I have always felt the importance to have an international institution for geographers. The main reason being the need to provide geography with the visibility it deserves on a global scale. In our current world, local and the regional scales are fundamental to understand spatial dynamics. One of the most important missions that has historically taken the IGU has been to link these different scales. This is also my commitment.

The IGU seeks to have members from all regions of the world. I am from a generation of Spanish geographers that has adopted a democratic and tolerant perspective; I work in a university where three different languages are spoken and the geographical discipline continues to progress. I have actively participated in the IYGU driven by the IGU, where they have seen all these principles. I hope that the Conference of the IGU in Istanbul will allow us to reflect and advance a mutual understanding of peoples and cultures in a location as important to civilization as the Mediterranean Sea is.

Beyond the current hegemony of English as a world scientific language, in my opinion it is essential to cultivate linguistic diversity and to facilitate the dissemination of important geographical works among authors who use other languages. I am also interested in increasing geography’s visibility and involvement with other disciplines. We all know that geography is connected with many others social and physical sciences. To the benefit of geography, I will seek to encourage geographers to participate in more multidisciplinary and thematic events.

Hence, if I am elected I will defend a series of principles that have guided my work as a geographer in the last few years. Among them, I would like to outline:

  • The defence of diversity as the fundamental basis for geographical work; a natural and cultural diversity willing to respect in any moment the different languages and forms of scientific expression of our discipline. This diversity should imply tolerance and an interpretation of the world coming from different points of views.

  • In this sense, I consider it fundamental to strengthen the IGU and UNESCO initiative of the International Year o­f Global Understanding (IYGU), now in process of transforming in a decade. This way, I defend the idea that geography is not only academic, but also popular, useful for citizens’ education – mainly young people  – and influencing decision-makers.

  • Our discipline has to favour interdisciplinarity, in a fruitful dialogue with other Human and Social Sciences, and in direct contact with Earth Sciences. It is clear that scientific dialogue and mutual influences have always enriched geographical knowledge. Geography as a discipline has to hold a central position in international science councils, due to its synthetic and integral character.

  • Finally, I defend a polycentric world with a scientific community growing in numbers; this means new actors with different means of expression that are transmitting their knowledge. This is a world articulated through large geographical regions, all of which hold its personality and approach, and contribute to building progress in diversity. A diversity that is always geographical.

J'ai l'honneur de vous présenter ma candidature pour le poste de Vice-Président du Comité exécutif de l'UGI. Je suis membre du Comité espagnol de l'UGI et membre personnel de l'UGI, membre de la Commission de l'UGI de la « Géographie Urbaine » depuis l'année 2000 et membre du Comité exécutif de la Commission de Géographie culturelle entre 2004 et 2012. Je suis également le responsable du RAC espagnol de l'AICG (Année Internationale de la Compréhension Globale). Une initiative que j'estime fondamentale pour projeter la connaissance géographique pour la société et pour les décideurs publics qui interviennent dans la planification spéciale. Durant les dernières années, j'ai servi dans le Comité espagnol de l'UGI et pour l'Association de géographes espagnols (AGE) en tant que responsable des Affaires étrangères.

Je souhaiterais mettre à contribution ma participation dans le Comité exécutif de l'UGI à l'énorme travail mené à bien par l'Institution. Permettez-moi d'en souligner deux en particulier. Premièrement, agir comme un pont entre l'Europe et les communautés d'Amérique latine de géographes, dans le but de favoriser une meilleure participation dans l'UGI des pays et universités hispanophones et lusophones au sein de l'UGI. Deuxièmement, donner à l'Espagne la possibilité d'accueillir de futurs événements de l'UGI.

Je me suis impliqué dans le Comité espagnol de l'UGI car j'ai toujours estimé important d'avoir une institution  internationale de géographes. La raison principale étant ce besoin de donner à la géographie la visibilité qu'elle mérite à une échelle mondiale. Dans notre monde actuel, il est fondamental de comprendre les dynamiques spatiales aux échelles locales et régionales. L'une des missions les plus importantes suivies historiquement par l'UGI a été la mise en relation de ces différentes échelles. Cela fait partie de nos engagements.

​

L'UGI cherche des membres des quatre coins du monde. Je fais partie d'une génération de géographes qui a adopté une perspective démocratique et tolérante. Je travaille dans une université dans laquelle sont parlées trois langues différentes et dont le département de géographie progresse chaque jour. J'ai participé activement durant l'AICG dirigée par l'UGI, qui respecte tous ces principes. J'espère que la Conférence de l'UGI à Istanbul nous permettra de réfléchir et d'avancer sur la compréhension mutuelle des peuples et des cultures dans un lieux aussi important pour notre civilisation que le bassin méditerranéen.

Au-delà de l'hégémonie actuelle de l'anglais en tant que langue du monde scientifique, il me semble essentiel de cultiver la diversité linguistique et de faciliter la dissémination des importants travaux géographiques d'auteurs utilisant d'autres langues. J'ai également l'intention d'améliorer la visibilité géographique et l'application de celle-ci à d'autres disciplines. Nous savons tous que la géographie est connectée avec beaucoup d'autres sciences sociales et physiques. Dans l'intérêt de la géographie, je chercherai à encourager les géographes à participer à davantage d'événements multidisciplinaires et thématiques.

C'est pourquoi je considère que, si je suis élu, je défendrai une série de principes qui ont guidé mes actions en tant que géographe durant les dernières années. Permettez-moi d'en souligner quelques-uns :

  • La défense de la diversité comme fondement de l'action du géographe. Une diversité aussi bien naturelle que culturelle, qui se traduit par le respect permanent des différentes langues et formes d'expression scientifique et de notre discipline. Une diversité impliquant une tolérance et une interprétation du monde selon différents points de vue.

  • En ce sens, je considère fondamental de soutenir l'initiative de l'UGI en collaboration avec l'UNESCO de l'Année Internationale de la Compréhension Globale (International Year of Global Understanding « IYGU », en anglais), depuis presque dix ans maintenant. La défense d'une géographie non seulement académique, mais également populaire, utile à la formation citoyenne de la jeunesse et pouvant influencer les pouvoirs publics.

  • Tout cela dans un contexte où notre discipline doit favoriser l'interdisciplinarité avec d'autres sciences humaines et sociales, et est en contact direct avec les sciences naturelles. Le dialogue scientifique et les influences mutuelles ont depuis toujours enrichi la connaissance géographique. La géographie doit jouer un rôle central dans les Conseils internationaux de la science, par son caractère synthétique et intégrateur.

  • Enfin, je défends un monde polycentrique, avec une communauté scientifique où chaque jour plus d'acteurs, avec leurs différentes formes d'expression, nous transmettent leur connaissance. Un monde articulé dans un ensemble de grandes régions géographiques, où chacune contribue de manière décisive avec sa personnalité et son point de vue à construire le progrès de la diversité. Une diversité géographique.
